Welcome to Enduring Caduceus

Doctors and doctors-in-training are killing themselves at higher rates than military veterans. In 2018, many committed suicide in New York City alone. This includes two trainees who hung themselves within five days of each other at one institution and a young doctor who wore her white coat as she stepped off the roof of the same thirty-three-story residential building where two other doctors had jumped to their deaths only months before. Her body remained at the front entrance for hours, covered with a tarp, before finally being removed.

This site shares anonymous stories by physicians about suffering and survival during medical training. If we share our experiences, especially stories of our vulnerability, we can cut away at the ‘suffering in silence’ culture, help someone out of perceived isolation, and maybe prevent another suicide. The goal is to help medical students, residents, and fellows to endure.
